The G7 Cybersecurity Working Group
With the intensification and diversification of cyberthreats, cybersecurity has become a central strategic pillar of national and international security, economic stability, and trust in digital services. In this context, G7 member states decided to enhance their cooperation by creating, in 2024, the Cybersecurity Working Group.
Context of creation
The G7 is an international cooperation platform where heads of state and government gather to discuss major global issues. Within this framework, rapid digital transformations and the increasing dependency of companies on information technology emphasise the need for structured and continuous dialogue on matters pertaining to cybersecurity.
In 2024, on the initiative of the Italian presidency, the members of the G7 set up a working group specifically dedicated to cybersecurity. The objective was to establish a common framework to share information, set shared priorities, and coordinate efforts.
In May of 2024, the G7 Cybersecurity Working Group held its first meeting in Rome – marking its official launch.
Role and missions
The Cybersecurity Working Group is intended to enhanced cooperation between G7 member states in the face of current and emerging cyberthreats. In particular, it seeks to:
Promote the sharing of experience, threat analyses, and good practices
Contribute to the elaboration of common cybersecurity guidelines
Reinforce the collective resilience of states and essential infrastructure
Maintain dialogue with public and private actors of the digital ecosystem
Functioning
Within the framework of this working group, the relevant national cybersecurity authorities of G7 member states are regularly brought together, physically or online, under the authority of the annual G7 presidency which, this year, has been assumed by France.
Actions initiated under the Italian (2024) and Canadian (2025) presidencies
Under the Italian (2024) and Canadian (2025) presidencies, the Cybersecurity Working Group began addressing several priority topics – including:
- The cybersecurity of the Internet of Things, in view of the proliferation of connected devices;
- The transition towards post-quantum cryptography, to anticipate future technological advancements;
- The cybersecurity challenges associated with artificial intelligence;
- The development of capabilities, of public-private partnerships, and of security-by-design approaches.
This work is intended to facilitate the coordination of public policy and to enhance the security of the digital ecosystem as a whole.
Prospects
The G7 Cybersecurity Working Group is an essential cooperation framework when dealing with constantly-evolving transnational threats. G7 member states intend to continue and expand this work, promoting a safe, resilient, and trusted cyberspace for citizens, companies, and institutions.
On the 1st of January 2026, ANSSI took over the presidency of this working group.
