Digital trust and identity

ANSSI’s initiatives and general stance on digital trust and identity

The digital transformation undergone by society entails the mass dematerialisation of communications, highlighting the importance of trusted digital services to support this development. These services must guarantee the security of transactions, ensuring the reliability of the information being transmitted, the innocuousness of the services used and, more generally, the privacy of citizens.

In this context, ANSSI has been assisting in the development of a trusted digital identity in France. It is responsible for supervising and qualifying trusted services. Digital identity should allow the secure electronic identification and authentication of citizens, and promote the implementation of a digital single market.

At the European level, ANSSI has also been actively involved in initiatives concerning the eIDAS regulation (Electronic Identification and Trust Services), which seeks to facilitate the security of cross-border transactions and to create a trusted framework for digital identity and authentication. By 2030, all European citizens will be required to possess a digital identity and trusted services recognised across all member states. ANSSI is involved in the implementation of eIDAS. It has also contributed to the revision of the text – which came into force in May of 2024 – in support of the interministerial directorate in charge of digital affairs (DINUM).
